Wyo Environmental Advisory Council 🏞️ & Hiring of Wyo Firefighter 🧑‍🚒

Wednesday, May 29th saw meetings of the Wyomissing Civil Service Commission and the Wyomissing Refuse & Recycling Committee.

Wyo Civil Service Commission is in the middle of hiring an entry-level firefighter.

The Wyo Refuse & Recycling Committee is proposing the creation of an Environmental Advisory Council for Wyomissing.

The Wyomissing Refuse & Recycling Committee voted to recommend Wyomissing Borough Council take preliminary steps to create an Environmental Advisory Council (EAC).

Background on the Wyo EAC Recommendation

Pennsylvania law establishes that EACS may be started as a mechanism for citizens to volunteer and support the local government in stewarding the region’s natural resources.

EACs can conduct research, coordinate volunteers, and provide advice and context for local government officials, among other activities. The WeConservePA website provides more details on EACs.

At the January 30, 2024 meeting of the Wyomissing Refuse & Recycling Committee, a group of Wyomissing residents requested that the committee explore and support the formation of an EAC for Wyomissing borough.

The residents cited that there are already 16 EACs in communities in Berks County, including in West Reading. Establishing a Wyomissing EAC was presented as an opportunity to collaborate with local, regional, and national groups to maintain a healthy environment for the Wyomissing community.

The Wyomissing Refuse & Recycling Committee subsequently created an EAC subcommittee. The EAC subcommittee assembled the recommendations that the Wyomissing Refuse & Recycling Committee is now sending to the Wyomissing Borough Council for review and action.
