West Reading Borough Council met on July 16th and July 23rd, approving several parking amendments and experimental parking regulations. The American Diner also announced its summer break.

The American Diner in West Reading announced on Facebook that the restaurant will be closed Monday July 29th till Tuesday August 13th for summer break.

West Reading Parking Updates

West Reading approved several parking amendments and several experimental parking regulations.

West Reading Parking Amendments

Among the parking amendments approved by West Reading borough council are:

  • 20-minute parking spaces along Penn Avenue

  • 3-hour parking, accessible parking spaces, and bus stop designation on the 300 block of South Seventh Avenue

  • accessible parking space on North Sixth Avenue

  • 3-hour parking on South Third Avenue from Penn Avenue to Court Street

West Reading Experimental Parking Regulations: No Parking on Clark Alley and Grape Street

West Reading approved a 90-day window of experimental parking regulations prohibiting parking on Clark Alley and Grape Street.

This adjustment was made due to West Reading fire trucks, public safety, and plows having difficulty accessing those streets.

During the 90-day window, warnings will be issued to people who violate the parking prohibition on Clark Alley and Grape Street.

West Reading Borough Council Updates

Council person Denise Drobnik, Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freyitz, and Chad Moyer with an oversized check made out to West Reading for $20,000.

West Reading grant funding

  • PA State Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freyitz visited West Reading Borough Council on July 16th to deliver a $20,000 grant awarded to the borough for infrastructure and services support

  • the West Reading Pool is drawing high revenue, which was attributed to customer service, including giving out free passes as often as needed for rain days etc.

  • the council approved the borough’s purchase of Schweitzer’s Service Center - anticipated to close on Friday July 26th, the sales arrangement was described as being as financially advantageous to owner Mr. Schweitzer as possible

  • upcoming events approved by borough council include the Pickle Palooza Pickleball Tournament, Fall Fest, Fitzy’s Run, and the Reading Hospital Road Run

    • Fall Fest received 80 applications from vendors in the first few days of registration

    • it was noted that the pickleball parking spaces are the responsibility of the city of Reading

  • council approved a West Reading police officer to use sick leave for 4 weeks of family leave for the upcoming birth of a child

  • West Reading Borough is applying for a grant through the WalkWorks Program to encourage physically active transportation, such as walking and biking, in the borough

  • West Reading Police Department reported an increase in police responses since 2023, ranging from a 13% increase in arrests to a 389% increase in parking violations

  • council extended West Reading’s local disaster emergency proclamation through the August 20th borough council meeting.
